Top Places to Visit in Sri Lanka
KANDY
Kandy, located in the center of Sri Lanka, is surrounded by mountains and tea plantations and contains numerous impressive cultural sites. As the last capital of the ancient kingdoms, Kandy is home to one of the holiest Buddhist temples, the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Kandy Lake, a tranquil refuge in the city's center, is a focal point. Kandy will annually host the Esala Perahera Festival in July or August, during which time majestic elephants will parade through the city's main streets, accompanied by frantic drumming, exotic chants, and traditional dances.
SYGIRIYA
The ancient Lion Rock Fortress is a must-see during any trip to Sigiriya. The site, which dates back to the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495 AD), was constructed on a massive, nearly 200-meter-tall rock. Visitors can still see beautiful frescoes on the walls and impressive palace ruins atop the rock column during their travels here. In 1982, Sigiriya was designated a World Heritage Site.
GALLE
Galle, a port city on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, is a must-see. This small but atmospheric city is brimming with colonial culture, which is best explored on foot. You will pass by the historic Galle Fort, the Dutch Reformed Church, and numerous heritage buildings, ancient mosques, and museums along the way. It is highly recommended that visitors stay in a heritage hotel to get a sense of the district's glorious past.
NIWARA ELIYA
Nuwara Eliya, a city in the central Sri Lankan tea hills, is frequently referred to as "Little England." As you travel through this area, you will see Victorian-style structures, well-kept hedgerows, and beautiful gardens, which will give you the impression of visiting a British village. The most enjoyable way to reach this location is by scenic train ride. Along the route, you will see numerous tea plantations with locals engaged in agricultural work.
TRINCOMALEE
Trincomalee, situated on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka, is approximately 265 kilometers from Colombo and is renowned for its deep, sapphire-blue harbor, powdery beaches, and charming Hindu culture. The highlight of a trip to Trincomalee is a cruise between March and November to observe dolphins and whales in their natural habitat.
